THE HISTORY OF PALACIO SAN MIGUEL
It is a French style building originally built in 1857, and renovated in several stages preserving its original structure. The magnificent vitraux with the image of the archangel San Miguel are among the most important architectural details.
The building was first used as a department store and it took its name from the nearby San Miguel Church. As Buenos Aires became bigger and wealthier, it was necessary to extend the store several times in 1880, 1890 and 1899.
In 1926, the prominent architect José Julián García Niñez, who previously designed some of the most notable Art Nouveau buildings in Buenos Aires, was commissioned to redesign the building. On the facade, he added columns consisting of a black granite base, pink Skyros marble shafts, and bronze worked capitals.
Nowadays, the Palacio San Miguel maintains its original style despite the necessary changes made in order for the building to be fit for modern day life.
The Palacio San Miguel is a significant building that demonstrates the love for the city, tradition and beauty. Bartolomé Mitre and Suipacha corner preserve the authentic essence of Buenos Aires city.
